Commercial concrete polishing is a sophisticated mechanical process that transforms existing concrete slabs into high-performance flooring surfaces. Unlike simple surface coatings or wax applications, true concrete polishing involves a systematic approach that fundamentally alters the concrete's molecular structure, creating a surface that is both beautiful and incredibly durable.

The Science Behind Polished Concrete

The polishing process works by mechanically grinding the concrete surface using progressively finer diamond-impregnated abrasives. This systematic approach removes surface imperfections while gradually exposing the aggregate within the concrete, creating unique patterns and visual depth. As the process continues, the concrete surface becomes increasingly dense and non-porous, resulting in a floor that actually becomes harder and more durable than the original concrete.

During polishing, we apply chemical hardeners (densifiers) that penetrate deep into the concrete matrix. These densifiers react with the free lime in concrete to create additional calcium silicate hydrate gel, the binding agent that gives concrete its strength. This chemical reaction fills microscopic pores and voids, resulting in a surface that is up to 40% harder than untreated concrete.
